Rent (The Movie)

We went to the morning showing of the new movie version of rentmovie.gifRent. Overall I liked it and was singing along to most of it, but I was disappointed that they turned a lot of the dialog into regular spoken word instead of song (like the answering machine messages, which was always some of my favorite parts of the musical -- and Alexi Darling doesn't even go "ker-ching ker-ching") Roger in New Mexico looked like a bad Van Halen music video, but otherwise the real gritty NY locations worked and it was wonderfully familiar yet adapted into a movie well. Anyone else see it (can't wait to hear what BobbiLynn thought...)

hi. emily. My friends and I who saw the play on B'way recall that the focus was on getting along without paying the rent to some rich guy from Westport... there was some mention of AIDS/HIV in the play but not to the extent that the movie version makes it the central theme....times really have changed ...... ciao.

Interesting, I didn't think they changed the emphasis much -- it was definitely focused on living with AIDS then, but times have definitely changed and our awareness of and openess about talking about the disease certainly have changed. It'd be an interesting comparison to Angels in America and how that weathered over time as well... hmm...
