New Mailbox

My fantasticly handy husband has built us a new mailbox (which I got to paint green - a lovely shade from the $1 "oops" table at HomeDepot). The problem was that the mail comes in through a slot in the garage and then lands in a spread out pile on the floor of the garage... and then I would run over it. So after a couple of weeks of putting up with mail with tire tracks, he rigged up a very impressive solution with a plastic bin that hooked into the door and captured the mail. Unfortunately packages of books from Amazon proved too heavy for the bin and eventually it fell one time too many and shattered. So we got some wood and he built me a new one from scratch with a cute door on little hinges.

I don't understand... how do you open the garage door without it hitting/crushing the mail slot? He is indeed handy - that is very cool. I'm just curious about the physics.
